August 3 Worship

There are certain things in life that money cannot buy.  You can't buy your way into continual happiness or having a worry-free life.  You can't buy true friends or harmony within your family. Regardless of what you own or what services you might purchase or what you might have tried to achieve, something is bound to go wrong.

The words from the prophet Isaiah for this Sunday would direct us to look beyond the things that money can buy and seek what God alone offers. These words have us look at what we hunger and thirst for in life?  Are they things that really matter?  This is the invitation that is given:

"Ho everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and you that have no money, come, by and eat.  Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.  Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy?"  (Isaiah 55:1-2)

What the Lord offers is of more value than what the world offers.  The Lord offers you a relationship that will last into eternity.  You are offered your entrance into heaven through faith in Jesus Christ as your Savior.  You are offered the vast riches of being in God's kingdom where you can find true peace.

In Isaiah's day, what the Israelites could buy -even without money - was the richness of God's relationship with them through the establishment of a covenant with David.  God had promised a king to come who would rule differently from earthly kings.

Our lives must also take up this offer.  Are we more concerned about material things or the relationship God wants to have with us?  You can't really put a price tag on the inner peace that comes from knowing Christ or basking in God's never-ending love.  I believe many of our lives have become unsettled because we are looking for comfort or security in the wrong places.

I ask you to contemplate these words of Isaiah for your own life and consider how you are satisfying your deepest longings.
