November 1 Worship

This coming Sunday is  All Saints Day.  Occasionally, this day will fall on a Sunday.  It is a day to remember all those who have lived in the past in faith.  It is a day to remember that you and I who are living today are also saints.  You will find some letters in the New Testament addressed to the "saints" at a certain town.  So, think of your sainthood this Sunday!

My message for this Sunday will focus on what is promised in Isaiah 25: 6 - 9.  Here is the text:

"On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples
a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wines strained clear.
And he will destroy on this mountain
the shroud that is cast over all peoples,
the sheet that is spread over all nations;
he will swallow up death forever."  Is. 25:6-7

These words are a reference to what God will do at the end times.  Imagine now the banquet being prepared.  The best of food will be present.  It's interesting how this theme gets played out - this theme of meals and feasts - throughout Scripture.

In addition, God will destroy death itself. Isn't that the greatest thing we can have in our hope for the future?  Death will be no more.  Think of all the sorrow that death brings not only to loved ones but also to us who might be aware that we are on the verge of death.  God has done something great for us that has come through Jesus' life here on Earth with his death and resurrection.  God has made provisions for our resurrection and a future life in heaven.

I would ask you to meditate on these words of Isaiah in your preparation for your worship this Sunday.

We all know that life has times of uncertainties and events that occur that were never planned.  Some of these events may be in the form of a crisis, where we are challenged in how we are going to cope.  We are suddenly thrust into unknown territory and must deal with the situation.

In such times we do find strength in God's word.  This Sunday, being Reformation Sunday, brings us to Psalm 46, which will be the basis of my message.  We have these words:

"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble."   Ps. 46:1

This particular psalm became the basis for Martin Luther's hymn, A Mighty Fortress Is Our God.  The God who is invisible and invincible becomes a fortress for us in times of crises.  We know that human structures have their limitations - even our military has it's vulnerability.

The psalmist would invite us to turn to God during the crises in our lives.  We may not be finding recovery right away, yet with God we can find hope.  You may want to read through the entire Psalm 46 in preparation for Sunday's worship.  May God's blessing be upon your worship this Sunday.

Discipleship Questions for Reflection

How have you handled crises in the past?  Did God come into the picture?

How might this psalm relate to the problems such as wars that we see in our world today?

This Sunday is St. Luke the Physician Day.  It is also the day when the Health and Healing Prayer will be offered in our worship.  It is interesting that we have a physician who became a gospel writer and, of course, brings us examples of healing in the ministry of Jesus.

My message will be focusing on the healing ministry of Jesus as foreshadowed by the prophet Isaiah.  We have these words:

"Surely, he has borne our infirmities and carried our diseases;
yet we accounted him stricken,
struck down by God, and afflicted.
But he was wounded for our transgressions,
crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the punishment that made us whole,
and by his bruises we are healed."
   Is. 53:4-5

The prophet is writing about a suffering servant, which the church later would see as a description of Jesus. Yes, Jesus did heal the sick; yet he himself was connected with our diseases.  Do you capture those words about bearing our infirmities and diseases?   Jesus came to bring us wholeness, whether it is healing our illnesses and also dealing with our sin.  Where we should have suffered; Jesus took our place and suffered.

This Sunday the prayer for the healing of body, mind, and spirit will be offered.  You might be afflicted with a physical illness, be suffering from some kind of mental illness, or feel fractured in your relationship with God. This prayer is for you!

I would invite you to reflect on these words of the prophet in terms of Jesus' healing ministry.  He came to proclaim the kingdom of God, to teach us, and now we must recognizing healing as an important part of his ministry.

The congregation was able to transition from being in the Lutheran Church -Missouri Synod to joining eventually what would become known as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

The guest speaker for this occasion will be the Rev. Cynthia Hileman, Associate to the Bishop, of the Metropolitan Chicago Synod.  A luncheon will be held after worship at Camelot Banquets in Hickory Hills.

Please join us in celebrating this milestone!
