August 2 Worship

We all like to talk about unity, about people striving together in order to live at peace with one another or to achieve a specific goal.  Divisiveness works against these situations.  It's interesting that when we look to Scripture, we see the call to maintain unity when in a sense there is already a unity present.

My message on Sunday will focus on the apostle Paul's call for unity as he wrote to the Ephesians.
"I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace."
 Eph. 4:1-3

The apostle would then go on to say the basis of this unity resides in the fact that there is one body, one Spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all.  Those readers could not but help to get the message!  There is a unity already present, but it needs to be lived out.

Yes, in Christendom, there has been divisiveness with conflicts and the creation of many, many denominations.  In view of this situation, I believe we still have the task to lead a life worthy of our calling.  My message on Sunday will explore deeper how this can be achieved.  In the meantime, I would ask you to reflect on these words of Scripture and may God's blessing be upon your meditation and your worship this Sunday.

Worship is at the heart of what a community of faith does.  It brings together  believers who then lift up their voices in praise and thanksgiving to God.  Worship becomes the occasion to hear God's word and also to receive the sacraments.

The joint worship with Moraine Valley Community Church this Sunday will focus on the theme of "worship."  A special presentation will be made by the youth group (Youth Praise Experiment) from Hodges Boulevard Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville, Florida.  The presentation will focus on how a congregation seeks to deal with the various styles of worship available.

Following the service, a Continental Breakfast will offered in the Fellowship Hall.  You are invited to the service at 10:30 a.m.

As we look in our society today, we would note situations where people are being oppressed, ignored, or taken advantage of by more powerful people. We can hear the prophetic voices in calling for raising the minimum wage, realizing that it is difficult to live on such low income with today's prices.  Many social services are having the state money allocated to them reduced.  There are people who will not get the help that is needed and voices are crying out.

This brings me to this Sunday and the appointed Old Testament reading (Amos 7:7-15).  It a prophetic word being delivered by Amos to the northern kingdom where people were being oppressed and neglected.  Amos describes God's judgment with the imagery of a plumb line. The text reads:

"This is what the LORD God showed me; the Lord was standing beside a wall built with a plumb line, with a plumb line in his hand.  And the LORD said to me, "Amos, what do you see?"  And I said, "A plumb line."
Then the Lord said,
"See I am setting a plumb line in the midst of a my people Israel; I will never again pass them by; the high places of Isaac shall be made desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste, and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword."
 Amos 7:7-9

God was using Amos to be a prophetic voice, and he was only a shepherd.  Yes, God can use any one of us to be a prophetic voice to help in working with injustice or become a defender of the poor.  Might not God be laying a cause on your heart to which you could do battle in order to bring God's kind of life to those who are downtrodden?

I invite you to reflect on the role of prophetic voices today and what you might seek to do.  May God's blessing be upon your worship this Sunday.
